Once again, I’ve been invited to The Haven Ipoh to experience a new festive menu, Poon Choi. It seems like yesterday that I was enjoying Christmas and the Christmas vibe still lingers even though it’s already 2016. Now we are preparing for Chinese New Year already! How time flies.

I planned to post this a lot sooner but lately, I’ve felt really sick. In fact, I’m feeling terrible at the moment, plus a lot of personal issues that came up so many of my posts have been delayed. I’m trying my best to get them all up as soon as possible!

Anyways, back to The Haven.

I’m really happy to be invited back to this luxury resort because I can’t describe how much I love the peaceful surrounding there even if it’s just for a short time. The place could relax your mind and body, making you temporarily forget all your stress and problems. It’s your intimate time to get up close and personal with mother nature, baby. ^_^

Just like their Christmas buffet last month, this time the set is for Chinese New Year. It’s called ‘Night Sky Gourmet Poon Choi‘. Instead of enjoying it at Cuisines, guests will enjoy their dinner with their loved ones at the clubhouse’s rooftop.

The Night Sky Gourmet (Halal) Poon Choi menu starts from January 8th until February 22nd, 2016 and as mentioned above, will be held at Clubhouse Rooftop. You’ll be enjoying your CNY dinner with your family under the beautiful night sky, with the stars twinkling and the moon shining down on you, overlooking the lake, if the weather permits of course. Isn’t that lovely?

From what I gathered, traditional Poon Choi is not halal and it’s not surprising at all. Therefore, Muslims can’t simply walk up to a restaurant to try the Poon Choi. However, at The Haven, Muslims do not have to worry as everything is halal. Plus, for those who are concern about health, rest assured that all the foods are prepared with natural ingredients with no preservatives, MSG, or artificial additives added.

This is the big pot, for those with a big family of around 8-10 people. The dish is made up of a specially selected array of a quality mix of ingredients. Here’s what is included in the Gourmet Poon Choi dinner set:

  • Poon Choi set: Sea Cucumber, Mushroom, Lantern Bladder, Scallop, Chinese Dried Scallop, Smoked Duck, Abalone, Prawn, Geese Feet, Fish Fillet, Carrot & White Radish, Yam, Chinese Cabbage, Chicken, Broccoli
  • Served with Garlic Rice
  • Hong Kong Kailan
  • Desserts

This is the smaller pot, fit for a smaller family of 4-5 people. Depending on which package that you choose (info below), you’ll get either the big pot or the smaller pot.

This is my first time trying Poon Choi. Of course, I loved the prawns, fish fillet, and chicken but the main highlight for me were the mushrooms and broccoli! I know. You must be thinking, ‘wtf?’ Yeah, the same reaction I had. Haha. Growing up, I never liked veggies, especially not broccoli or mushroom. I don’t know why, but their broccoli was so fresh and the humongous mushrooms were so delicious that those are the ones I ate too much of on that day. If there were more, I surely would have eaten more, all day long.

The soup is light, with hints of salty and sweet. I devoured and loved almost everything in that pot, except for the feet which I don’t eat. I was very happy, haha.

You’d get garlic rice and some hong kong kailan. I didn’t like the kailan that much because it was quite dry. Hong Kong Kailan is always cooked like that. I don’t like dry food. Pour me more soup, more gravy, I’d say! I like my rice drenched in a sea of gravy 😀

One thing I’ve never mentioned before is that I love how courteous their staffs are. They’d always smile and greet you, be it the waiter/waitress, guards, cleaners, etc. From what I’ve seen and experienced, I’d say they have one of the best customer services out there, keeping up with their 5-star luxury resort status. Good job at training your staff, The Haven. Please #kipidap.

After stuffing myself with the Gourmet Poon Choi, it was time for dessert.

The first dessert is this red bean soup with glutinous rice balls in it. At first glance, I thought they were fish balls haha.

This glutinous rice ball is soft and chewy, reminding me of Japanese mochi except mochi is sweet and this is not. There’s a hint of sweetness but not too overwhelming. For me, I’d prefer it a bit sweeter because I love sweet things as desserts but now that I think about it, it’s actually better, being less sweet and all, so that you would enjoy the next dessert.

This pastry! They mentioned the name of this pastry in Chinese but I’ve forgotten what it is. Is there an English name for this? Does anyone know? Please leave it in the comment below.

Omaigod. Omaigod. Omaigod.
This Chinese pastry is heaven-sent. Seriously. How could this simple, tiny, flat pastry taste so sinfully delicious? It’s soft but slightly crispy, with layers of puff pastry skin, and if I’m not mistaken, kaya? It’s sweet, it crumbles easily in your hand, melts easily in your mouth but the awesomeness of the taste just lingers in your mouth, and in your head for a very long time.

Seriously, is there anywhere I can get this? If I could make this, I seriously would. Just looking at this and writing this, trying to remember it in my mind makes my mouth water.
