After the renovation of Ipoh Parade mall, we started seeing new cafes and restaurants opening there. What once used to be a dingy, quite a shitty mall has now been upgraded to a classy mall. When you walk or drive by the mall at the front entrance, you can’t miss a small burger place outside called ‘Ben’s Burger’.

According to them:

Egg-yolk yellow walls and sleek wooden accents have foodies and amateur interior designers salivating, even before the grub arrives. While songs from the 70s and 80s round out the retro American diner experience, those who eschew meagre portioned servings marvel when confronted with an array of substantially sized burgers and generous heaps of fries. Ben’s Burgers is cocooned within Ipoh Parade Mall, so customers may work up an appetite with some frenzied shopping beforehand.

The place is not that big, kind of like a small burger shack or something. The obvious color theme is yellow since you’re greeted with yellow walls with wooden panels and floors as you enter the place. It does feel kind of retro like I just stepped in a burger place in the ’70s. I love the whole interior look but it’s definitely not a place to be when there’s a big crowd but fortunately, you have the option to sit outside to those who prefer fresh air instead.

They serve burgers of course. There’s a wide variety of burgers. But the first thing I noticed is the price – they’re quite expensive for a burger and I wondered why. Prior to coming to this place, by just looking at pictures, I couldn’t help myself but wonder what’s so special about the burgers at Ben’s Burger. They look like ordinary burgers, but the price just doesn’t seem to match it, unlike Burger Camp which serves unique-looking burger combos.

When I got my burger, I finally understood why.

From the picture, it looks like your typical burger, nothing special. All burgers come topped with fresh green coral lettuce, tomato, cucumber, onion rings, cheddar cheese, and plain mayonnaise. Then there’s your choice of the patty – beef, grilled chicken, tempura fish, portobello mushroom, prawn, etc.

I’m a fan of beef so I chose Ben’s Dinner which consists of grilled beef patty with mustard mayonnaise and BBQ mayonnaise. So why does it sound expensive for a typical burger?

It’s the SIZE!

I was so surprised when my order came to my table. The portion is huge! It may look and sound like your typical burger but the size is definitely not the normal size. It was the first time I saw a burger that big unless you’ve been to a special burger place like Grilled 22 where they serve monster burgers. You can’t see it in the picture, but the size is bigger than my hand. Could even be twice the size of a standard burger. I didn’t have anything to compare it to at that moment because I wasn’t expecting the burger to have any difference in size. It’s not too big though for big eaters, but might be for small eaters.

Ben’s Dinner – RM19.90

My order came fast. It came unexpectedly fast that I started to question whether my burger was fresh. Or maybe somebody else had ordered the same thing but then canceled so they gave it to me. I don’t know. But it reached my table faster than expected for a meat patty that big that’s supposed to be ‘grilled’.

The burger is soft. By soft I mean if I pick it up and hold it in my hand, everything will fall apart especially the buns and the patty. I was surprised by that softness as well. I had to use a knife and fork to eat from the plate. Taste-wise, it’s your typical burger, nothing too special but the soft beef patty and buns feel like they melt in my mouth. Is it really supposed to be that soft? Then bun would literally ‘melt’ in your mouth, no joke.

The burger comes with a generous serving of fries on the side.

Ice Lemon Tea – RM6.90

My set also came with a glass of ice lemon tea. Now, I bought the set voucher from Groupon so everything was included at a set price. According to the website, a glass of ice lemon tea is valued at RM6.90.

Really? I didn’t look through the menu but if that’s the actual price of that standard glass of ice lemon tea, then it’s extremely expensive for me. Did they import the tea from the Caribbean Island or something? It tasted like the regular ice lemon tea though… For that price, I would expect something special like a sparkling drink or smoothie, or milkshake.

Of course, what I ordered was just the basic menu. They have different types of burgers that you can choose from and might be more special than my burger and also cost more. I’m sorry I can’t remember if they serve food other than burgers because this post is yet another terribly delayed post, and at this moment, they might have changed the menu and price

The service was alright. Nothing to complain about, the food came fast, the server was friendly enough. I can’t say much about other staff. I didn’t do much observation because it was quite late, and it was a rainy night and I wanted to go home fast.

Overall, it wasn’t too bad but apart from the size of the burger, it was simply a normal burger to me, nothing special. It tasted nice though, but what burger doesn’t? Haha. As I didn’t try their other burgers, I can’t say anything about other menus. Maybe one day if I go back there, I’ll try another burger and do another review. They also have a cheaper option for breakfast and lunch so I can maybe try that soon.

Main Convent girls are so lucky to be in a school located next to the mall 😛
